Learning Zone

Welcome to the Learning Zone

The Learning Zone is managed by Mrs Bird assisted by Mrs Bedocs and Ms Mehmet, who together advise and provide all members of the school with books, for information and leisure, for all abilities.

The Learning Zone promotes national literacy, cultural and sporting events, and supports the curriculum with a range of lively displays. In addition, the Learning Zone hosts several themed weeks across the year, including Roald Dahl week in September for Year 7s, Harry Potter for Year 8, The Juniper Book Awards (formerly the Essex Book Awards) between October and February, World Book Day in March and a Millionaire Reader Breakfast in July.

We are open from 8.15am – 4.30pm Monday – Thursday and 4.00pm on Fridays. Students are welcome to borrow, return and renew books, read, keep on top of homework or study before school, break, lunchtime and after school.

Our School’s Library Management System enables students and staff to search for resources, educational websites, reserve books, write reviews and view accounts. Students can also access this through the direct link on the Students page.

At HRS we use the Accelerated Reader programme to encourage students to read for pleasure, gain knowledge and improve their vocabulary.

Accelerated Reader is a daily progress-monitoring assessment tool and the STAR Assessment allows us to instantly assess pupils reading levels, reading ages and National Standardised Scoring levels in reading as well as measuring growth.  AR helps guide pupils of all levels to read appropriate books and to closely monitor reading practice using reliable and valid computer based quizzes. Prizes and Credits are awarded to students. For more information, please visit: www.renlearn.com.

All Year 7 & 8 classes receive a thorough induction into how the Learning Zone works, and fortnightly visits, for reading and borrowing, are an integral part of the English curriculum. Students are encouraged to challenge themselves by engaging with a wide range of genres. In addition, information and research skills are developed as part of the Learning Zone lessons, to help students research, collate and analyse information to avoid plagiarism.
