All students in Years 7 and 8 study Art at HRS, they learn a wide variety of techniques including drawing, painting, printmaking and clay. Students are encouraged to participate in activities within the local community such as designing a front cover for the Dunmow Carnival brochure, alongside other competitions.
Year 7 and 8 homework is set every half term and is project based whereby students move through a historical timeline of ‘Art History’. They are required to produce a practical outcome of their choice relevant to the time period, coupled with a quiz checking their knowledge and a brief image analysis.
From Year 9 we offer the AQA GCSE ‘Art Craft & Design’ course – students study a wide range of skills and techniques, developing their work in response to a variety of themes. The study of Art History and the context in which Art is made is an important part of the course, understanding and appreciating your own work and the work of others is an integral part of our teaching and learning. We run an ‘enrichment’ programme at lunchtime to support students.
A level Art & Design and A Level Photography is offered from Year 12 with Edexcel. The photography department has a well-equipped digital suite and Darkroom. A Level students have their own studio space to work in outside of set lessons.
Trips to galleries are arranged for GCSE and A level students. Visiting artists also run workshops at HRS so students can expand their knowledge and skills in areas such as ink creation, 3D design and painting.
