Art and Design

All students in Years 7 and 8 study Art at HRS, they learn a wide variety of techniques including drawing, painting, printing and clay.  Students are encouraged to participate in activities within the local community such as designing a front cover for the Dunmow Carnival brochure, alongside other competitions too.

Year 7 homework is set every half term and is project based.  Students will move through a historical timeline and are required to produce a practical outcome of their choice, a written piece and complete an online quiz too.

Year 8 students receive two pieces of Art homework every term, in the academic year 2017-2018 all Year 8 students will complete a project based homework every term. Students will move through a historical timeline will be required to produce a practical outcome of their choice, a written piece and complete an online quiz too.

We offer the AQA GCSE course ‘Art Craft & Design’ from Year 9 – students study a wide range of skills and techniques, developing their work in response to a variety of themes. The study of Art History and the context in which Art is made is an important part of the course, understanding and appreciating your own work and the work of others is an integral part of our teaching and learning. There is an Art & Craft club that is run in the Art department on Thursday lunchtimes and Thursdays after school.

A level Art & Design and A Level Photography is offered from Year 12. The photography department has a well-equipped studio and Dark room. A Level students have their own studio space to work in outside of set lessons.

Trips to galleries are arranged for GCSE and A level students. Visiting artists also run workshops at HRS so students can expand their knowledge and skills in areas such as ink creation, 3D design and painting.
