Weekly News Bulletin: 18 June 2021

Your Views Wanted
With the introduction of the primary school phase at HRS and the work we are undertaking on the curriculum in the secondary phase, we are considering what key threads should form part of our curriculum. These threads would run from Reception to Sixth Form. We are really interested to find out what is important to parents, therefore please share your views with us via the linked Google Form attached to this week’s bulletin.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Many thanks,
Miss E Colton
Deputy Headteacher

Sixth Form Induction
Congratulations to the Year 11 students who attended our sixth form event this week for their excellent engagement with the programme. In addition to the academic side of induction, students had the opportunity to develop their team building skills through a range of outdoor challenges run by Mr Hore, our Assistant Head of Sixth Form. The feedback from students has been extremely positive, which is always a pleasure to hear.

On the final day, an external motivational speaker, “the man with the orange tie” was very well received by staff and students alike who were challenged to think about their belief systems with particular regard to fixed mind-sets standing in the way of personal progress. Student participation in this session was exemplary with the speaker having a visible immediate impact on their thought processes.

An excellent three days overall with a pizza extravaganza buffet finale, very much appreciated by all involved.

We look forward to welcoming you all into the sixth form in September 2021.

Mr Cooke, Mrs Wright, Mr Hore and Mrs Barry (the sixth form leadership team)

Students are still required to wear face masks when moving around the school and on the school bus. Please ensure your child has a mask with them at all times.

News from the Learning Zone
Our Year 7 students have been taking a look at how to find Non Fiction books using the Dewey Decimal Classification system (DCC).

We are using the ‘Where’s that Book’ book, a catchy title for the index and our Eclipse Reading Cloud management system.

Students will be producing a short Slide show using one of the Non Fiction books from the Learning Zone before the end of the year.

Our Year 8 students are busy preparing for a Dragon’s Den style presentation of their favourite book. Using their powers of persuasion they will sell their product (book) to the rest of their class. We are looking forward to seeing all the presentations before we break up.

If you need to collect your child for an appointment or anything else, you do not need to call the school but should provide a note for your child to have with them to show staff if they need to leave a lesson and to sign out at student reception.

Food Practical Lessons
Please may we remind you that students are not allowed to wear nail polish/gel nails to a food practical lesson.
Thank you.

Physical Education Faculty: Curriculum update
Please see below the activities students in Year 7 & 8 will be involved in during this half term for Core Physical Education.

Year group Activities
Year 7 Athletics / Cricket / Football / Rounders
Year 8 Athletics / Cricket / Football / Rounders
Year 9 Athletics / Basketball / Football / Rounders / Yoga-Pilates
Year 10 Basketball / Cricket / Lacrosse / Rounders / Yoga-Pilates

On the days your child has PE they should wear their PE kit with their blazer over the top of their PE shirts. When it is cooler students may also bring their rugby/hockey shirt and wear this over their white polo shirt when in PE lessons, as this provides another layer to warm up in.

Students are expected to sanitize at the start and end of a lesson whether inside or outside the buildings.

Students should bring their own water bottles in and ensure they are filled up at break and lunch times only, before the start of their Physical Education lessons.

Can we thank all parents and carers for their support and the students themselves with the vast majority participating enthusiastically and with vigour in our adapted curriculum in these challenging times.
