World Book Day
World Book Day has been very successful this year, we were delighted to welcome the author Kate Wiseman who led workshops with Years 8 and 9 on the subject of Mudlarking.  Kate is a licensed Mudlarker able to search the banks of the River Thames, she showed off some of her finds from Tudor shoe leather, a Roman ring and musket balls.  Her new book is expected out next year following the lives of two orphan Mudlarkers.

The whole school read a five-part story over the course of the day, written by Sam in Year 8 it was lovely to share a story with the whole school.

Students in Years 7 and 8 received a £1 World Book Day token from their form tutors, older students can collect one from the Learning Zone.  We had biscuits to share with any readers during break time a rare treat as eating is usual banned in the Learning Zone!

Finally, we have a small number of the WBD £1 books which can be exchanged for a voucher.

News from MFL
Year 9 French
Please note that all Year 9 students studying French have been given a booklet called “My emergency kit”.  The booklet has been sellotaped to the back of the students’ exercise books and should remain there all the time.  The booklet has been designed to help students with speaking and writing skills in French.  Students should use the booklet in class and at home as it contains a writing frame provided by the exam board and useful vocabulary for the speaking tasks.   Higher tier students also have access to verb tables and complex structures.

Please encourage your son/daughter to use the booklet at all times to avoid the use of translators. The booklet will also be very useful during the mock exams later on this year.   Mrs Winchester and I will regularly set spelling tests on the writing frame.   Each box is clearly numbered and labelled in French and English.   As a parent, you can test your child easily.

If the booklet is lost or damaged, we will ask you to pay for a replacement booklet (50p).
Mrs S Roy – Head of French

Salamanca Trip
Please note that the final payment for this trip is due by 15th March.

If your child wishes to participate in the optional tour of the Real Madrid stadium, please ensure that the separate payment for this is made as soon as possible.

One student has advised that she is now unable to participate in the trip. This means that one place has become available.   If you wish to take advantage of this, then please email vnewell@hrs.education.   The place will be allocated on a ‘first come-first served’ basis. The fully-inclusive cost of the five-day trip is £600.
