Year 11 GCSE Success Fair – Wednesday 13th March 2019
At The Helena Romanes School, we believe that every student should leave our school with the skills, results and personal qualities that enable lifelong success. Our values of honesty, respect and success run through everything we do and it is with this in mind that I am writing to you.

On Wednesday 13th March 2019, we will be running a very exciting event which is aimed directly at the parents and carers of our Year 11 students. Our ‘GCSE Success Fair’ is designed to promote good practice around exams; this is a holistic look at how students can maximize their potential for their upcoming GCSE exams.

Following an introductory address by key members of the school team, parents and carers will have the opportunity to visit stands that will help guide your son/daughter in essential areas such as diet, sleep, stress management and exercise. In addition to this, we will ensure that revision techniques and resources are available for all. Refreshments will be available.

The ‘GCSE Success Fair’ will be held in the school main hall from 6.00 p.m. to 7.30 p.m. You will not be required to stay for the duration of the event but we recommend that you attend the introduction at 6.00 p.m. if possible before visiting the stands. This fantastic opportunity will help you to support your son/daughter in learning how to work smarter, not harder.

As a school we are expecting a high level of interest in this event and places will be allocated on a first come first served basis. Unfortunately, due to the anticipated high demand, we can only allocate up to two places per student. Please click on the link below to book your place(s) and ensure that you indicate the number of people attending. You are reminded that students are not required to attend the event.

We hope that you will be able to attend this important event which will undoubtedly prove to be of significant benefit to both you and your child. If you would like any further information, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Year 11/13 Geography Enrichment Trip to Italy October 2019
Less than 10 spaces now remain on the trip to Sorrento. The deadline for the £100 deposit has been extended to Friday 15th February at the very latest.
A waiting list will then be made on a first come first served basis in the case that any student who has already paid drops out.

Thank you to those who have paid their first deposits – those students have now secured a place on the trip.

News from MFL
Year 11 French

We would like to inform you that the second set of French mocks will take place on Friday 15th February. Mrs Winchester and I will give students their time this week. We will also publish the times on SMHW. It is important that your son/daughter revises thoroughly for this last set of mocks and attends the exam. The real speaking exam is fast approaching (early May). Please continue to encourage your child to attend Intervention after school on Wednesdays or Thursdays.
Mrs S Roy – Head of French

Polish GCSE
If your child is interested in taking GSCE Polish, then please contact Ms Glodowska on aglodowska@hrs.education for details of the after-school support being offered by the school. Please note that these lessons are not for beginners but aimed at those needing to develop and improve the Polish language skills required for GCSE. This GCSE will continue to be available for the foreseeable future so these classes are suitable for all year groups.

For those taking GCSE Polish this year, the speaking examination will take place on Thursday 9th May.

Portuguese GCSE (short course)
Please note that the speaking examination for this course will take place on Friday 26th April.

Salamanca May 2019
If you have not already done so, please can you submit all the required paperwork to the school before February half-term. Please ask you child to hand this in to Mrs Newell in D109 or to the Administration team in D107A.

GCSE Spanish Year 11
All students have been allocated an intervention / revision support slot. These sessions take place Friday lunchtime in either D109 or D201 (alternating weeks). It would be helpful if you could speak to your child about this and remind him/her to attend.

GCSE Spanish Year 11 Speaking Examinations
The mock examinations will take place over three days: 11th-13th February. Your child has been given an allocated slot. It would be helpful if you could speak to your child about this and remind him/her to attend. Please note that, due to the tight time schedule, it will not be possible to allocate an alternative time if your child does not attend.

The real GCSE speaking examinations in Spanish will take place on 24th-26th April (students taught by Mrs Aldous) and 7th-9th May (students taught by Mrs Newell). Students will be allocated a precise date and time shortly. Again, if your child does not attend, it will not be possible to allocate an alternative (unless the absence is due to illness which, due to the constraints imposed by the exam board, must be evidenced by a doctor’s note).
