Water Bottles
There seems to be some confusion over the use of water bottles so I would just like to clarify the situation.

As stated in my end of term letter to parents I have stopped the sale of plastic bottles from the school canteen from September.  I regularly walk the school site and the biggest litter issue for us is plastic bottles and the recycling of them.

With the rise in environmental awareness following David Attenborough’s Blue Planet series, this is an area we need to address as a school and as part of the wider community.  It is hoped that by the end of this week we will have installed three extra water fountains around school and I would like to ask parents/carers to support us, by providing your child with a reusable water bottle.  We have not banned students from bringing in plastic drinks bottles but encourage them to use reusable ones.  The dining halls have a selection of drinks cartons that can be purchased as an alternative.
Thank you for your co-operation.

Uniform
This year the supplier did not fulfil the order made by Jacks of Dunmow which has led to some limits on their stock.  This might have had an impact on you when trying to purchase uniform this summer.  We would like to extend our thanks to Jacks of Dunmow for trying to resolve the issues.  If you do have any complaints about the ordering of uniform, please email me and let me know of any concerns.  I will then discuss this with Trutex in a future meeting.

HRS APPs
At Helena Romanes we use a number of APPs and online tools to help keep parents informed about homework, pastoral information and payment for lunches and other items.

ParentPay
HRS uses ParentPay to accept payment for lunches, trips and various general equipment. Payments are immediate and lunch accounts can be sorted out within minutes.  Most of the older year groups should already be set up with an account.  Year 7 log on codes were posted home at the end of last week. Please contact the finance department if you have not received this.

ShowMyHomework
Homework for students is detailed on this APP.  Parents will need their own account to log on and can view what homework has been set and the deadline for submission.  Year 7’s and new students in other year groups will bring home a security code to enable you to log on.  Please note that students have a different log in to parents and will be shown how to use the system during an IT lesson this week, therefore you may not see homework appearing on the APP until later this week or even next week.

Xpressions
Groupcall Xpressions enables you to view attendance, behaviour, achievements and timetable information.  The data will have been reset for this academic year.  You do not need a log on code, however, for security the data you input to log on (mobile phone number and email address) must match the information we hold on file for your son/daughter otherwise it will not allow you to connect.

Useful information and instructions for ShowMyHomework and Xpressions can be found in the attachments below.

Modern Foreign Languages
Students in Year 7 have been provided with a yellow leaflet (stuck into their exercise books) which details the expectations for Spanish and French. We would ask parents/carers to read and sign this leaflet to acknowledge that they are aware of this information and can support their child accordingly.

Please note that students in Years 7, 8 and 9 will be provided with electronic copies of the text books via ShowMyHomework.  Please can you ensure that your child downloads and/or prints, and saves the relevant texts to ensure that they can use these for homework, revision and independent learning throughout the year.
Thank you.

Music Lessons
HRS has peripatetic music teachers that come in during the school day to provide music tuition for our students.  The music tutors will liaise with you directly about timetables etc. and payment for lessons is directly to them and not to the school.   Music lesson prices remain the same as last year with 10 weeks costing £100 for 20 minute lessons and £150 for 30 minute lessons.

Please ask your child to pick up a leaflet from the music department or student reception if they require any further information.  Lessons currently offered are guitar/electric guitar, piano, brass, clarinet, saxophone, flute and singing.

For families currently in receipt of free school meals, the school has some provision to be able to help towards the cost of lessons.  However, this would need to be assessed on a case by case basis by the finance and music departments and reviewed termly. Please email finance@hrs.education if this is relevant to you.
