Weekly News Bulletin: 5 March 2018

School Closure
May I take this opportunity to thank you all for your patience and understanding last week when we had to close the school due to the bad weather.

It is always a difficult decision to make but I would like to explain to you the process we as a school follow before making any decisions. On the first day I set off for school at 5.30am to assess the situation but unfortunately my car got stuck in the snow so Mr Foster, Deputy Headteacher and the Site Team met on my behalf and the decision was taken to close the school as it was unsafe for students and staff. On Thursday and Friday, whilst travelling to school was not a problem as the roads had cleared overnight, there were still large areas of sheet ice around the school buildings representing a significant risk of serious injury to students and staff. As such we had no option but to close the school for those days.

Tesco Bags of Help Scheme – Under the Microscope
Please may we remind you about the success of our recent application to Tesco for the ‘Under the Microscope’ project.

Customers can now vote at the Tesco store in Great Dunmow until Monday 30th April 2018. Please help us to win the vote by placing the blue token given out at the checkouts in the HRS ‘Under the Microscope’ voting box at the front of the store.

The awarded money will be used to provide extra microscopes and equipment for use in lessons, science club and our open days. We want to inspire potential biologists, environmentalists and scientists by making science fun through opening up the amazing microscopic world around us. Using microscopes and gaining new microscope skills, our budding scientists will look at what distinguishes different materials like fabric and paper and discover what lurks in the likes of soil, water or a jar of dry yeast. Their curiosity will be limited only by their imagination….
Thank you for your support!

Parents/Carers of Students in Year 8
As part of the careers guidance and education programme we deliver at Helena Romanes your child will have access to Kudos, which is an online careers guidance and information computer program from CASCAID.

The students will be shown how to use this program during one of their PSHCE lessons in March.

Kudos is accessible online and we are encouraging the use of it at home to involve parents with the important decisions your child has to make about their future options.
Kudos will help your child to assess their interests and skills, as well as letting them explore and research different education and career options, enabling them to make informed decisions about their future.

To access the program please visit www.cascaid.co.uk/login and click on the ‘Login or Register’ button, your child can then log in using the access details generated in their lesson.

All CASCAID programs come with a comprehensive range of support materials including the Parents’ Guide to Careers Guidance. This Guide will help you understand the options available to your child at each transition stage.

To view the Parents’ Guide please visit: www.cascaid.co.uk/support/products/kudos/getting-started/guides/.
