Weekly News Bulletin: 9 October 2017

Student Attendance
The Essex Code of Conduct for Penalty Notice has been amended with effect from 1st October 2017 to include the following change:

A Penalty Notice for term time holiday can be issued if there are six or more unauthorised sessions due to a holiday taken during the first two weeks of September. This will come into effect from September 2018 onwards.

Please may we remind parents that term dates should be checked on our school website before booking a holiday. If the term dates that you are looking for are not shown, please contact the school for further information. Please note that term dates are subject to change and that you should not assume that they will be the same date every year.
Thank you.

Show My Homework
We were excited to have launched Show My Homework (SMHW) at the beginning of September, an online tool to help you keep track of your child’s homework.   SMHW is a simple homework calendar that Helena Romanes is using to ensure homework is set and communicated to all students and their parents/carers. Teachers use it to set homework quickly and ensure that students and parents/carers always have the information they need about homework available.

Students
At home students can log in via a PC or on their phone/tablet APP using the ‘Log In with Google+’ button at the bottom of the sign in screen. Students use their school email address e.g. username@hrs.education and their password but only after they have followed the link for log in with Google+.

Parents/Carers
Parents/carers can log in via a web browser at www.showmyhomework.co.uk using the ‘Log In’ button in the top right hand corner of the page and then click ‘I’ve been given a PIN to get into my account’ and enter the PIN provided by the school – please email khennessy@hrs.education if you have not received this information from your son/daughter.

Xpressions App
The Xpressions APP was launched back in May and many parents like having the information provided at the touch of a button. Data available includes Attendance, Timetables, Behaviour and Achievements. Exam timetables will be made available in the spring to those taking their GCSE’s which is also very useful.

Xpressions is only available on an APP. Search “groupcall xpressions” on your mobile or tablet APP store and download for free. Follow the directions to log on. The information used (email address and mobile phone number) must match the information you have provided as contact information otherwise it will not be able to identify you or link your children to your account. Once this is set up you have a pin code access to the APP.

Essex Safeguarding Children Board
In light of the allegations of historical child sexual abuse at various football clubs across the country, the Essex Safeguarding Children Board has published Guidance for Parents/Carers on choosing out of school activities with Sports Active Essex and Essex County Council LADOs. This can be found on the new Safeguarding in Sport pages on their website under the ‘Parents/Carers’ section or by clicking the following link: http://www.escb.co.uk/.

In light of the growing concern about Gangs, including the issue around ‘county lines’, the Essex Safeguarding Children Board has updated its Parents/Carers pages to provide information on signs to look out for and how to support young people. This information can also be found on the above link.

Uttlesford Schools Apprenticeships Evening
We wrote to parents/carers of students in Years 10 to 13 recently about an information evening focussing on Apprenticeships which will take place on Wednesday 11th October 2017 and will be hosted in Saffron Hall at Saffron Walden County High School. All students and their parents/carers from all the Uttlesford Secondary schools are invited to attend.

The evening aims to provide information about Apprenticeships at Intermediate, Advanced, Higher and Degree level and, in addition to an overview of apprenticeships, will include the chance to talk to companies who recruit apprentices, as well as colleagues from Colleges and Universities involved in apprenticeship delivery. We are also being joined by Essex University’s Edge Hotel School which offers degrees over two years in Hotel Management and Events Management with Hospitality. In addition we are offering the chance to meet the Head of the new Stansted Airport College which will open in September 2018. The college will offer leading edge training for the aviation industry through both vocational courses and apprenticeships in Aviation & Business Services, Engineering, and Hospitality & Events Management.

The programme for the evening is designed to allow you to attend two workshops as well as the more formal information-giving element of the evening. The workshops feature a range of employers, Further and Higher Education providers who will be able to provide you with more detailed information about apprenticeships and answer questions. The aim is for you to be able to find out how apprenticeships are organised, what you need to do to get an apprenticeship and the potential career pathways that they open up.

Please find further information about the workshops in the separate attachment below. Please complete the choices form at the following link: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/QTRX8B8 so that we can allocate you to the appropriate workshops prior to the event.

The event will run from 7 – 9 p.m. at Saffron Walden County High School, CB11 4UH. The venue has ample parking and is fully accessible. The coffee bar will be open prior to the event starting.

We look forward to seeing you on 11th October.
