Sainsbury’s Vouchers
We are once again collecting the Sainsbury’s vouchers for our school to exchange for sports equipment.  There is a box in student reception where they can be dropped off up until 2nd May.  Thank you in advance!

The HRS World Challenge 2018
The HRS World Challenge 2018 team are trying to raise money to go on an expedition to Peru in 2018 to help those in poverty by building houses and renovating schools in the country.   We will also be going on a trek to Machu Picchu while we are in Peru.

It will be an unforgettable experience for us and for the people we help. There are 12 of us on the team and we each need to raise £4,550.   To help with the fundraising, we are holding an Italian Evening on March 10th between 6pm and 10pm. There is a buffet with lasagne and five types of pizza, a live band called Blue Light Taxii, a magician, and a raffle.   There will also be a bar where alcoholic beverages and soft drinks will be served.  Tickets are £14.99each and can be booked by emailing worldchallenge@hrs.education .

Maths Update
Year 11 will be sitting a final exam in the Exam hall next week. Wednesday P3-4 will be non-calculator and Friday P1-2 and 3-4 will be calculator. This will be a full size paper to give them a realistic experience of what the exam in the summer will feel like.

Pace – Many students say that they didn’t have time to finish tests.  As teachers we train them to look at the mark scheme and 4 marks means that you should spend 1 to 1 1/2 times the available marks on a question.   Many students do not have watches as they rely on their phones.  After Easter we plan to teach using walking-talking mocks where we go through mock papers as if we were the voice in the children’s head, preparing the skills required to solve a question….usually this is a positive experience.
Year 10 GCSE statistics coursework

We are about to embark on coursework looking at data from the music industry. Students are expected to plan, complete and analyse the results of their investigation over the next 2-3 weeks. This work must be completed in advance of the Easter break. After Easter, we will focus on more statistic topics in preparation for the exam in the summer and then back to the rest of the maths syllabus.

Over the next few weeks I will try to contact any parents that I don’t see at Parents Evening to give a comprehensive breakdown, but if you have any concerns, please contact me at bbirss@hrs.education and I can reply with a breakdown of exam results from your child’s last assessment.

Year 9 Child Development and Health & Social Care
The Year 9 Child Development group and the Year 9 Health and Social Care group will be sitting their external examination in both these subjects this summer.

I will be sending out details regarding some additional after school revision and exam preparation sessions in the next couple of weeks. These sessions are due to start after the Easter break.

All H&SC students should have revision guides, it is a good idea if they are reading through the guides and completing the tasks.  The Child Development students will be given the opportunity of buying a revision guide from the school.   Mrs Curran will inform students how these can be purchased as soon as possible.

In the meantime child development students should be using their class books to review topics that have already been covered this year, in preparation for the exam.

Information from Art
The Art Department Office is offering some hard-wearing, light-weight professional art folders to buy at the special price of £10.  This offer applies to art and photography students from Year 9 upwards and will shortly be available to pay on ParentPay.   Numbers are limited so it is a case of first come, first served!

Calling all budding artists… Children & the Arts in partnership with the Jack Petchey Foundation is launching the Secondary School Art Prize.   If your child is aged 11 to 18, lives in Essex or Greater London and likes getting creative, this is the competition for them!   This year’s theme is PERSPECTIVE and students can draw, paint, collage or make their own print.   Their work should be 2D and no bigger than an A3 piece of paper but the rest is up to them.   The deadline for entries is Friday 31st March and the winner in each age category will win £500!  There are also prizes for runners-up and £1000 for the winning school’s art department.  To find out how to enter, visit www.childrenandarts.org.uk/competition.   Please see the attached flyer for more information!

Weston Homes Open Day
Weston Homes are hosting an Open Day on Saturday 25th March 2017 between 10am and 3pm at their Head Office: Weston Group Business Centre, Parsonage Road, Takeley CM22 6PU.

The event is for students, parents and teachers to gain an insight into the careers within the property development industry and to understand and recognise the diverse range of opportunities on offer at Weston Homes.  Their potential careers pathways range from Surveying, Buying and Estimating, to Architectural and Engineering Drawing, Site Management, Land Buying, Planning and Design.

They are aiming their Career Development Programmes at Year 11 and Sixth Form students including those studying GCSE’s, BTEC and A- Level’s.  Weston Homes will be recruiting for approximately 8 opportunities this year.

HAMEC (Harlow Advanced Manufacturing & Engineering Centre) are holding an Open Event on Wednesday 8th March 5.30pm -7.30pm.

This is a £11 million major investment for Harlow and intended to inspire and train the next generation of engineers.

On show will be the Bloodhound land speed record breaking vehicle, 3D printers and CAD suite.

The week beginning 6th March is National Apprenticeship Week, and we have various events to publicise for parents and students.

The Apprenticeship team at Writtle University College will be running drop-in sessions to allow students and their parents to speak directly with team, to see what Apprenticeships they have to offer and to learn a lot more about their schemes.   If students can find a suitable employer, the bonus is that on an Apprenticeship they get paid whilst learning.

Drop-in sessions are free to attend, and are taking place on:

Wednesday 8th March – 3pm – 5pm
Thursday 9th March – 3pm – 5pm
Friday 10th March – 2pm – 4pm

Colchester Institute (incudes Braintree College) is holding an Apprenticeship Evening on Thursday 9th March from 5.00pm – 7.00pm.

College and employer talks will run alongside the event to introduce apprenticeships. For Year 11 and Sixth Form students, some employers will be actively recruiting at this event.  Guidance will also be given on the application process.

There is an Apprenticeships Fair at Anglia Ruskin University, on Tuesday 7th March from 3.30 7.30pm.   There are no age limits for this event.

There will be over 20 exhibitors from various sectors including Hospitality, IT, Construction and more.
