Internet Safety Incident – use of Apps
We have become aware of an issue this week with a couple of Year 7 girls being contacted by an adult male who has told them he is watching them and will get them. It was particularly frightening for them as they were standing next to each other and he called one and then the other.
The matter has been reported to the Police. It is believed the girls’ numbers were obtained from “snap chat” where they are “friends”. Please keep a close watch on Apps your children use. Make sure they are age appropriate (Snap chat is for 13 year-old’s plus) and that you have ensured they have privacy settings set at the highest level. Some apps do not advertise their privacy setting but can often be found by googling name of app – privacy settings. If it doesn’t have privacy settings then we would advise it is not used.

Mrs P Callingham – Clerk to the Governors
Thank you to the PTA for giving up their time to source plants and to plant up the planters outside the front of school. It is very much appreciated by us all.

Year 10 Parents
Further to the letter sent to Year 10 parents regarding the purchase of the novel ‘Of Mice and Men’, I have a list of those parents who have paid but there are quite a few students who have not yet collected their book. If you have paid for one of these books, please send your child to Mrs Romain in the English office from Tuesday next week to collect it.

Uttlesford Schools Careers Fair – ‘Routes to Success’
The 2014 Uttlesford Schools Careers Fair will take place on Wednesday 8th October, 2014, and will be hosted in Saffron Hall at Saffron Walden County High School. All students and their parents from the four Uttlesford Secondary schools (Forest Hall School, Helena Romanes School, Joyce Frankland Academy and Saffron Walden County High School) are invited to attend.
Following a morning mini-conference for all Year 12 and some Year 13 students, these students will be able to visit the Careers Fair from 1p.m. – 2.15 p.m. Selected students from Year 11 are also being offered the chance to visit the Careers Fair as an organised school visit for the 1p.m. – 2.15 p.m. session. All students are welcome to return with parents/carers to the later sessions.
The Careers Fair is then open later in the day to all students and their parents from The Helena Romanes School. It will of course be most relevant to students in Years 10 to 13 who should already be considering their progression options, but we would encourage students and their parents from all year groups to attend and start to explore the career opportunities that exist. The first session will run from 3.30pm – 5.00pm. allowing parents to meet their children from school and visit the event with them. The main session will then run from 6.00pm to 9.00pm when we expect to have the bulk of the visitors to the Careers Fair and some of the organisations represented will be giving talks during the evening.
The event will offer students and parents an excellent opportunity to talk to representatives of universities, colleges, apprenticeship providers and nearly 50 national and local employers about the range of educational, training and employment opportunities that are available to students when they leave school. Organisations represented include GSK, Ford Motors, Addenbrooks, Stansted Inflight, Institute of Civil Engineers, Writtle College and Oxford, Cambridge and Anglia Ruskin Universities.
We very much hope that many students and parents will want to attend this event, which is unlikely to be repeated for at least two years. The venue has ample parking, is fully accessible and light refreshments will be available to purchase.
