The first ever Mandarin cultural day was held at HRS, for 70 students in Years 7 to 10.
The event – led by The Essex Jiangsu Centre for Chinese Studies – was a treat for those students who have worked hard this year or achieved highly in Modern Foreign Languages.
They learnt about travelling in China, shadow puppetry, calligraphy and some language.
Teresa Green, Modern Foreign Languages teacher, said: “This event was about really stretching and challenging our more able students. We took them out of their comfort zone with a cultural taster day. It is good to offer them something a little bit different.”
The day was brought to a close with students taking part in a traditional Chinese lion dance.
The school intends to launch a Mandarin after-school club in the future.
Lara, Year 8, said: “It’s been great to learn a new language and the culture which goes with it.”
