Sixth Form

Introduction

At The Helena Romanes Sixth Form we recognise that strong partnerships between students, teachers and the leadership team are the key to learning. We set aspirational targets for our students and to raise standards and expectations to empower them to reach their full potential.

OFSTED 2016

“There is strong evidence of a positive transformation in the sixth form. Measures of learners’ progress show that for A-level subjects, learners’ progress was stronger in 2015 than in previous years. The progress of current learners shows continual improvement in A-level subjects and is now above average. Learners on vocational courses continue to make excellent progress and attain highly.”

Teaching and Learning

Teaching groups are small and with a higher demand for independent learning outside of the classroom we expect our students to organise and manage their own workloads effectively, liaising directly with their subject teachers as appropriate.

OFSTED 2016

The perception of the sixth form among potential learners and the community has improved leading to growing numbers of learners in the sixth form.”

Holistic and Pastoral Support

We have a dedicated tutor team who play a vital role in student progress and development, offering practical and emotional support.

OFSTED 2016

“Learners are well supported in the sixth form and their progress is now monitored closely. Subject departments have extended the increased rigour of Key Stage 4 support and challenge to the sixth form.”

The school has a dedicated Careers Adviser and an excellent up to date careers library. There are opportunities for students to visit the Higher Education Super Fair, as well as a variety of universities.  In addition all students in Year 12 have the opportunity to participate in a 1-2 week work experience programme.

OFSTED 2016

“Beyond their chosen subjects, there is a good variety of enrichment activities available to sixth formers. There are opportunities to undertake work placements, which about half of learners take. For the rest, participation in the business challenge provides useful enterprise learning. This goes some way to addressing the requirement for personalised programmes that include work-related learning, but more work is needed to fully address the work-related aspects of the 16 to 19 study programmes.”

We operate in partnership with the school, parents and staff to ensure that there is a continuous support network from the very first to the very last day at The Helena Romanes Sixth Form.

Sixth Form Facilities

We think it’s very important that our Sixth Form students have their own space and own identity. Within the purpose built Sixth Form centre, students have access to dedicated seminar rooms and a Sixth Form café. There is also a designated working area, well-equipped with computer technology to assist students with their studies.

Great Dunmow Leisure centre is within close proximity and offers students a range of sports facilities including fitness suite, squash courts, astro turf and swimming pool.

Enrichment programme

At The Helena Romanes Sixth Form, students have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of extra and super curricular activities allowing them to broaden their own experience and develop leadership skills. We believe it is vital that the Sixth Form experience equips our young adults for the competitive landscape of university choices and career advancement

Students are also encouraged to participate in: World Challenge expeditions, dramatic productions, charity fundraising and a range of sporting activities and fixtures.

“The Helena Romanes Sixth Form gives everyone great opportunities to try new things, with amazing sports tours to Australia, South Africa, and a 2014 tour to Singapore and Malaysia.”
