The number intended to admit is a maximum of 270 pupils in the year (Years 7 – 10).  In the event of oversubscription, places will be allocated using the following criteria in the order given:

  1. Children Looked After;
  2. Children from the priority admissions area (map available at the school);
  3. Where the child has a brother or sister at the school at the closing date defined above and where this sibling remains at the school when the child starts;
  4. Remaining applications.

Straight line distance between the home and school will be used as a tie breaker, with those living closest to the school having highest priority. Distances will be measured using the Local Authority’s Geographical Information System.

Special Cases:

Children with a statement of Special Educational Needs that names the school will be given priority over any of the above criteria.

If you wish to discuss these arrangements, please contact Mrs Richenda Whitehead, Admissions Secretary.  (Tel. 01371 878659).

Visits

Visitors are always welcome. It is helpful if an appointment is made. Please contact Mrs Richenda Whitehead.

Admission arrangements for Students with Disabilities

Before admission students and their parents will meet with the appropriate Director of Learning (DoL), the Head of Extended Learning and representatives from SENCAN.  An assessment of the student’s needs will take place and appropriate provision will be determined. The DoL and Head of Extended Learning will then liaise with other staff to make any arrangements that are required – including levels of support.

Year 6

Parents whose children live in Essex must apply to the Local Authority (LA) Essex County Council for their preferred secondary school.  Parents must use the Common Application Form (CAF) to apply to our school.  At the end of August 2009 Secondary Education in Essex booklets, including the CAF and notes of guidance, will be sent to all Year 6 pupils attending an Essex primary, junior or independent school and as far as practicable to Essex pupils attending primary schools in other LAs.  Information is also placed on the Essex County Council web site www.essex.gov.uk/admissions.  The closing date for applications, including on-line, is 26th October 2009.  National offer date is 1st March 2010.  The LA will send offer/refusal letters for places at all schools to parents of all pupils living in Essex by first class post.

In September 2009 our intended number to admit was 270 students.  We received a total of 425 applications in which we were named as first, second or third preference.  In 2009 the last child was admitted under criterion 4.

Prospective parents and carers are invited to the school early in the Autumn Term prior to admissions.

This Year's Open Morning is: Saturday 3rd October 2009 from 9.30a.m. - 1.00pm.

If it is not possible to visit us on the 3rd October, we also arrange a number of coffee mornings where you can meet the Headteacher and have a tour of the school. Please contact Mrs Richenda Whitehead to book a place.

Primary Liaison

We value our positive partnership with local Primary schools and our links continue to grow. Year 5 and 6 students are given the opportunity to 'sample' the life of the school during a typical day. Primary schools have the relevant information, or you can contact Mrs Mercedes Aldous, Director of Learning for Year 7. Many of our Faculties have arranged reciprocal visits to our partner Primary Schools and joint ventures such as Music Festivals, Mini-Olympics and Public Speaking Competitions have been organised.
