Weekly News Bulletin: 8 February 2016

Year 10 Parents’ Evening
The Year 10 Parents’ Evening will take place on Wednesday 24th February 2016 from 5.00pm to 8.00pm.

This will be an opportunity to discuss your son’s/daughter’s academic progress at this important stage in their education.  Students should be making appointments with their subject teachers and recording them on the relevant page in their planners.  Students are expected to attend the evening with their parents/carers.

Please note that parking is not permitted in the Leisure Centre car park.  There will be spaces in the school car park which can be accessed by turning right at the roundabout at the front of the building.

We would be grateful if you could complete the reply slip from the email that was sent home earlier this week and return it to Mrs Calcutt in the DoL Admin Office by Wednesday 10th February 2016.

We look forward to meeting you on this occasion.
Mrs M Aldous – Director of Learning Year 10

Year 11 Half Term Revision Sessions
To assist Year 11 students in their studies, a number of staff are running revision sessions during the half term break (Monday 15th to Friday 19th February).  I would recommend as many students attend these sessions as possible, especially those who were not projected their target grade in their recent report.  A message has been emailed home with a copy of the timetable.  This is also available on the school website and I would be grateful if you could encourage your son/daughter to sign up with the relevant teachers.

The next set of mock exams is taking place the week before half term (8th-11th February) and the week after half term (22nd-26th February).  This is the final practice students will get and so the best picture of areas of weakness.  All students should be revising every night from this point onwards, using a revision timetable to organise their time, ensuring all subjects are covered, as well as relaxing time being factored in.
Thank you for your support.

Chinese School Exchange Visit
Further to the previous announcement regarding the Chinese School Exchange visit in July and October 2016 organised by HRS and Essex County Council, we would like to remind you about this exciting opportunity for your son/daughter to be involved in an educational and cultural exchange with Chinese students from the The Yangzhou University Affiliated Middle School.

Please note that the deadline for applications to participate has been extended to Wednesday 10th February 2016.  We are also now extending this opportunity to Year 9 students.

The July dates have been updated and are now Wednesday 6th July to Thursday 14th July inclusive.

Please get your child’s applications in as soon as possible – this is a fantastic opportunity and places are limited

The details are as follows:

  • HRS students must currently be in year 9, 10, 11 and 12.
  • Chinese students will arrive into the UK on Wednesday 6th July.  Each student will be hosted by an English family (with a spare room available) from Wednesday 6th July to Thursday 14th July inclusive.  Ativities throughout their stay will be organised by HRS and Essex Council.
  • HRS exchange students will travel to China from Friday 21st October until Sunday 30th October inclusive.  HRS students will stay with the family of the student they hosted in July.  Parents must be available to drop their son/daughter at Heathrow on Friday 21st October and collect them on Sunday 30th October.
  • One HRS teacher will travel with the students in October.  However, HRS is just one of a cluster of schools that is participating in the exchange so there will be a total of between six and eight British teachers travelling at this time.

The estimated cost to British families for their son/daughter to participate will be approximately £900 and this can be paid in instalments. A non-refundable deposit will be required if your son/daughter is selected to participate.

Places on this exchange programme are very limited.  If you would like to put your son/daughter forward as a candidate, please be sure that you are in a position to commit to the points listed above.

In addition, we would like your son/daughter to write a short paragraph explaining why they should be considered to take part.

Expressions of interest should be submitted as soon as possible via email to tgreen@hrs.education and mduffy@hrs.education. The closing date to receive applications is Wednesday 10th February.
We look forward to hearing from you.

WhatsApp Warning
Please can parents and students be aware of ‘sharing’ messages using WhatsApp.  It has come to our attention that some messages are circulating among students asking them to forward a message to a number of their friends in order to activate and view a video file.  In some cases the video files have contained inappropriate adult content. Please advise users of WhatsApp to delete these messages.

Parents’ Governors’ Forum – Tuesday 9th February 2016
The Governors hold a forum for parents each term.  This provides the opportunity to ask the Governors questions about how the school is run.

The next forum will be held on Tuesday 9th February at 5:30pm in the Learning Zone.

Please would you inform Mrs Penny Callingham (pcalllingham@hrs.education) of your intention to attend.

Music Workshop at Flitch Green Academy
Fifteen talented Year 9 & 10 GCSE musicians from HRS were warmly welcomed to a Music Workshop for Year 1 & 2 pupils at The Flitch Green Academy this week.

The Flitch Green Academy wrote to the school after the Workshop expressing their thanks to the incredibly talented HRS musicians.  They said that their pupils were “amazed and enthusiastic about watching the musicians and asking questions and that it had given them all something to work towards”.
